Holiday Letters

For this holiday entry, I wanted to share some notes to you. These were inspired by some of my holiday cards. It is my hope that you connect with at least one of these so that you feel encouraged and motivated for the journey. It isn’t just about pressing on to press on, it’s also about developing the endurance to enjoy the journey as you press on.

Because notes, letters and considerations are important. They make me feel seen, and I want you to feel seen today.

Because loving you:

Loving you is like a peaceful night after a heavy snow has fallen. Everything is covered in glistening snow. The moment is neutral as the fresh powder mutes the night, making it feel untouchable and still. Like one life in an eternal gaze, not lonely, just present. The street lamps make the snow sparkle, but don't distract from the star-filled sky and shadowy view of the foothills nearby. Inside it's warm with a cosy fire, coated in giant knit blankets. It’s festive, with big laughter and chatter that simmers over a feel good movie.

For the one who needs the highest mountain top and the lowest valley to come together:

It's like when you're in the valley, it takes strength to see the mountain top. It's hard to imagine. You have to grit your teeth, close your eyes and focus on the view to come. The journey can be long and hard. There isn't a light at the end of the tunnel at every turn. Sometimes it feels like a forever trudge, but some how you can still hold onto something. Take it like a light that’s within. A tight bundle of strength and energy, courage and valor. This inner strength doesn't always reflect how you feel, but it can give you the resilience you need when you need it. Carry vitality like a shield, never letting the gleam in your eye fade. Make a decision to bring the mountain top and the valley together. Walk forward, seeing both as a tool and resource, not so much as a situation or even a goal. Take advantage of that incredible fire and creativity, and be an example for the next weary traveler. You can do this.

For the one playing the game of life:

On to the sword fight for you! You like a good game, and value true strategy. Life isn't always serious, sometimes it's propaganda, and sometimes it's a little mischievous. I might get my need for mischief by your example. You like to pick up your sword and really see what your opponent is made of. It's instinct and wits, sport and challenge. Yes, there's work and training, but it's worth it for the game.

For the artistic daughter:

For the one that has her own work of art to show for. Scandalously busy, you constantly have a paintbrush in your hand. It's not about what's in front of you, but more about all the thoughts in your head that must be shared, expressed and made into a masterpiece. Your stories are worth the endless circles you spin. The things you have to say are meant to be saved, expressed and held together by book bindings put in a library of art and remark.

For the one taking new steps:

There is so much ahead of you. I don't know why, but when I think about you, I think of one of those "van life" vans. Except, you never go any where alone so you need the kind of bus that musicians have for touring, because you have an entire entourage of loved ones with you. There is adventure ahead for you. Get what you need so you are ready. If it's buying a chef hat to remind you that you have goals, or if it's making a business card so you can start doing make-up for brides on their big day, do it. Raise your expectation and get ready!

For the one about to be inspired:

For your gallery of remark and wit. You're entering territories that you've never been before and they're only going to fire your creativity all the more. Get ready for an onset of new characters, fresh perspective and inspiring intakes. Things might feel mundane, but they never really are. You know how to ignite an entire room with creativity and passion. I'm excited for your dreams to come. Remain confident and keep your eyes open for those things that have yet to be discovered, but are calling your name. You’re the one that is meant to notice and share them.

For the new graduate:

For the one with a curiosity that gave them a thousand traits and qualities. You’re used to being in school, being dedicated to something. When you dive into a hobby or interest, you don't just dabble, you immerse yourself in it. That was the whole idea of college any way, learn your trade. I know that school held so much of your attention and energy for so long, and not having it is like a void in your day to day that you don't necessarily know what to do with. You will find that career, that dream job, but hopefully you’ll also find more. Just know that life is an adventure and it's meant to be explored. Some one like you doesn't waste time, never think you're wasting time by figuring out what you love and pursuing that next exciting project. Keep driving forward, and when you're not in the midst of that next project, be kind to yourself and let yourself rest. A rested mind will do more in their next season than one that is restless and lacking peace.

For the one dreaming of more and finds it:

A little pixie dust on that, some fairy dust over here; you're lighting up your life with magic and wonder. You know what you like and you're willing to see what else could be fun. You’ve already taken steps toward freedom and the wildly unexpected. Keep adding little spices to every day, let your imagination make every possibility endless. You're worth the adventure for more, and there is more. You don't have to settle for anything less than your biggest dream. Hold onto every interest and curiosity. Let them simmer, and then if you want to, pour some magic on them and make them possible.

For the one discovering herself in a new way:

Something really sweet is bubbling up in you. You're so thoughtful, kind and full of love. You consider people and you see something in them that they don't actually see. Keep in mind that what you see isn't obvious to every one. That's what makes it a gift. It makes you unique. It gives you a spark of something that is just your own. You genuinely care about people's needs, and you understand them emotionally with out ever really knowing who they are. That is an incredible sight to have. Continue to look at yourself the way you see others, with love and grace. You are truly glamorously, stunning, and beautiful. Hold on tight, because your unique gifting is only going to catapult you further into a fulfilling life. Your adventure is right in front of you, just keep looking and finding the value in the way you see things.

For the one standing in the midst of a treasured place:

For all the pearls and opals that have yet to be discovered, you are the greatest treasure of them all! When I think about you, I see ocean bluffs. The ocean glides in with salty subtle waves. The cliffs are steep and towering. But they stand protected from storms so that in any climate, the waters are not crashing against, but instead holding tight to the rocky formations. As if to hug and console. As if to say, “you’re mine and I am yours and together we are a masterpiece.”

For the highly regarded captain:

For all the adventure still in your sight. You carry a specialized sword and know your place. It’s like a salute to the one that continues to look forward and press onward. Like the captain of a ship about to set sail, and the crew that looks to him with such regard because he is not only respected, but deeply cared for.  He is guarded on every side.
